How Much Is a Private Jet from LAX to London?
A private jet from Los Angeles to London costs $150,000 to $250,000 one-way. Here is what drives the price, which aircraft can make the trip, and what to expect.

Flying private from Los Angeles to London is one of the longest routes in the charter market. At approximately 5,400 nautical miles, it requires a heavy or ultra-long-range jet, and the cost reflects the aircraft class, fuel burn, and positioning involved. Here is what to expect.
The Route
- Distance: ~5,400nm (depending on exact departure and arrival airports)
- Flight time: 10-11 hours eastbound, 11-12 hours westbound (jet stream effect)
- Departure airports: KVNY (Van Nuys), KLAX (LAX private terminals), KSMO (Santa Monica, limited)
- Arrival airports: Luton (EGGW), Farnborough (EGLF), Stansted (EGSS), London City (EGLC for smaller jets), Biggin Hill (EGKB)
Why Not Heathrow?
Heathrow (EGLL) is the world's busiest international airport and has extremely limited general aviation access. Most private jets arriving in London use Luton, Farnborough, or Stansted. These airports have dedicated private aviation terminals with customs processing, ground handling, and car service. Farnborough is particularly popular for private aviation and has a reputation for premium service.
Cost Estimates
| Aircraft Type | One-Way Estimate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gulfstream G550 | $150,000 - $190,000 | Can make it nonstop with favorable winds |
| Global Express | $165,000 - $210,000 | Comfortable nonstop range |
| Global 7500 | $200,000 - $250,000 | Longest range, largest cabin |
| Gulfstream G650/G700 | $190,000 - $240,000 | Fast, efficient, nonstop capable |
| Falcon 8X | $170,000 - $220,000 | Nonstop capable, efficient |
These are one-way charter estimates. The range reflects seasonal demand, aircraft positioning, and operator pricing. Summer (June-August) and holiday periods (Christmas, New Year) are peak season for transatlantic flights and command premium rates.
What Drives the Cost
Aircraft Class
LAX to London requires an ultra-long-range jet. No light, midsize, or super-midsize jet has the range. This limits you to the most expensive aircraft in the charter market:
- Gulfstream G550: 6,750nm range, 14-16 passengers, one of the most common charter-available heavy jets
- Global Express / Global 6000: 6,000nm+ range, 13-17 passengers, wide Bombardier cabin
- Global 7500: 7,700nm range, the longest-range business jet in service, four-zone cabin
- Gulfstream G650ER: 7,500nm range, fast (Mach 0.925 max), very popular for transatlantic
- Dassault Falcon 8X: 6,450nm range, three-engine design, fuel-efficient for the class
Fuel Burn
An ultra-long-range jet burns 250-350 gallons per hour. Over an 11-hour flight, that is 2,750-3,850 gallons of Jet-A. At $6-$8 per gallon (prices vary by location), fuel alone costs $16,500-$30,800 per direction. Fuel is the single largest variable cost on a transatlantic flight.
Positioning
If the charter aircraft is not based in Los Angeles, it must fly empty to pick you up. A ferry flight from the East Coast to LA adds $30,000-$50,000 to the trip cost. Conversely, if an operator has an aircraft already in LA (or has a client who needs a ride from London to LA), your positioning cost may be reduced.
Landing Fees and Handling
European airports charge landing fees, handling fees, and parking fees that can be substantial. Farnborough and Luton charge premium rates for private aviation services. Budget $3,000-$8,000 for European ground fees per direction.
FET and Taxes
US Federal Excise Tax (FET) of 7.5% applies to domestic segments of international flights. UK Air Passenger Duty may apply depending on the flight structure. VAT considerations vary. Your operator should itemize these.
Can You Make It Nonstop?
It depends on the aircraft and conditions.
Nonstop capable (LAX to London, ~5,400nm): - Global 7500 (7,700nm range) - yes, comfortably - Gulfstream G650ER (7,500nm range) - yes - Gulfstream G550 (6,750nm range) - yes, with standard loads - Global Express XRS/6000 (6,000nm+ range) - tight, depends on winds and payload - Falcon 8X (6,450nm range) - yes, with standard loads
May need a fuel stop: - Older Global Express variants with reduced range - Heavy jets with reduced range due to payload or engine condition - Any ultra-long-range jet on a day with strong headwinds
Common fuel stops for westbound flights (London to LA) include Keflavik (Iceland), Gander (Newfoundland), or Shannon (Ireland). A fuel stop adds 45-90 minutes to the trip but allows the aircraft to carry full payload.
Flight Time Breakdown
Eastbound (LA to London): 10-11 hours. The jet stream typically provides a tailwind eastbound, reducing flight time.
Westbound (London to LA): 11-12 hours. Fighting the jet stream adds time. Some flights can take 12.5 hours in winter when the jet stream is strongest.
Plan for wheels-up to wheels-down of about 10.5 hours eastbound and 11.5 hours westbound, plus 15-30 minutes of taxi time at each end.
The Cabin Experience
On a 10+ hour flight, the cabin matters. Ultra-long-range jets are designed for this:
- Full galley for hot meals, multiple meal services over the flight duration
- Lie-flat seats or a dedicated bedroom (Global 7500, some G650 configurations)
- Shower on the Global 7500 (optional configuration)
- Wi-Fi via satellite (Ka-band on most modern ULR jets) for work and entertainment
- Full-size lavatory with vanity
Request the specific cabin configuration when booking. A G550 configured with 16 seats has a very different experience from one configured with 12 seats and a full divan for sleeping.
Customs and Immigration
Arriving in the UK on a private jet, you clear customs at the FBO. Farnborough, Luton, and other private aviation airports have dedicated customs facilities. The process is typically faster than a commercial terminal:
- 01Aircraft parks at the private terminal
- 02Border Force officers board the aircraft or meet passengers in the FBO
- 03Passports inspected, entry stamps issued
- 04Customs declarations if applicable
- 05You walk to your waiting car
Departing the UK, the FBO handles departure processing. Your operator coordinates all of this.
Returning to the US, CBP processing occurs at your arrival airport. The operator files eAPIS in advance. You clear customs at a designated general aviation port of entry.
Getting a Quote
Use the Bravo cost estimator for a starting estimate. For a firm quote on a specific date and aircraft, request quotes from operators who specialize in transatlantic charter. The price will vary based on aircraft availability, positioning, season, and demand.
“Transatlantic charter is the segment where aircraft selection matters most. The difference between a G550 and a Global 7500 is not just price. It is cabin size, range margin, and whether you arrive rested or exhausted.”
