Gogo AVANCE is the dominant air-to-ground (ATG) system in North American business aviation. It talks to a network of ground towers, which means coverage across the continental US and into parts of southern Canada — and nothing over oceans, and little over Mexico or the Caribbean. The AVANCE L5 hardware peaks around 25 Mbps under good conditions, which in practice supports email, browsing, and a serviceable video call. The smaller L3 fitted to many light and midsize jets is a step down — think messaging and email, not streaming. Gogo's 5G upgrade has been slow arriving; hedge accordingly.
Satellite systems — Ka-band service via Viasat, Ku-band via various providers, and Honeywell JetWave hardware on many large cabins — cover oceanic and international routes. Real-world speeds on Ka-band systems commonly land in the 15–30 Mbps range: multiple simultaneous video streams, large file transfers, no coverage cliff at the coastline. This is the fit standard on ultra-long-range aircraft, which is why a G550 crossing the Atlantic keeps its passengers online while an ATG-equipped Challenger 350 goes dark leaving Nantucket.
Starlink is the disruption. Low-earth-orbit service brings latency low enough for live video and speeds frequently reported north of 100 Mbps, with STC approvals accumulating across business-jet types since 2023 and retrofits moving fastest in charter fleets that sell connectivity as a differentiator. Supply is still uneven — it's a per-tail retrofit decision — but when a quoted tail has Starlink, connectivity stops being a question.

Which aircraft actually have WiFi
By category, the pattern is consistent. Ultra-long-range and heavy jets — G650, G550, Global 7500, Global 6000, Falcon 7X — almost universally carry satellite connectivity, because their mission is international. Super-midsize jets like the Challenger 350 and Citation Longitude are typically equipped, usually with ATG on domestic-focused tails and satellite on some; the Praetor 600 frequently carries Ka-band. Midsize aircraft like the Citation Latitude and Cessna Citation Excel vary tail by tail with the operator's retrofit history.
Light jets are the most variable. Newer Phenom 300E and Pilatus PC-24 deliveries often include connectivity; older light jets — Learjet 45, Hawker 800XP, early CJ3s — frequently have none, and on a 90-minute leg many charter clients never notice. Turboprops mostly fly unconnected.

What you can actually do at each speed
Email and browsing need 2–5 Mbps and work on essentially every equipped aircraft, including older ATG installs. Video calls want 5–10 Mbps sustained with tolerable latency: reliable on AVANCE L5 domestically and on Ka-band anywhere, marginal on older Ku installs, effortless on Starlink. Brief remote participants that you're on airborne WiFi — occasional pixelation is normal on non-Starlink systems, and wired headphones beat Bluetooth for audio sync.
Streaming in HD wants 10–25 Mbps: comfortable on Ka-band and Starlink, possible-but-shared on L5 (one stream, not four). Large file transfers — video cuts, CAD packages, deal-room uploads — depend on sustained throughput and data allowances rather than peak speed; satellite systems with generous data plans win, and this is the use case where film production and trading clients should specify their needs in the quote request.
Two practical constraints apply to every system. ATG connectivity drops below roughly 10,000 feet, so the first and last segments of every leg are offline; satellite systems connect gate to gate but can be shadowed during steep banking. Booking a connected flight
Connectivity questions belong in the quote request, not the day-of-flight phone call. Operators with well-equipped fleets — Vistajet satellite-equips its Global fleet; NetJets and Flexjet publish connectivity standards; Thrive Aviation advertises Starlink across much of its fleet — will answer precisely. A vague answer is itself information.
For international legs, the coverage question is binary: satellite or offline. An ATG-only tail flying to the Bahamas or Europe via the North Atlantic loses service leaving US airspace and doesn't get it back. If in-flight connectivity matters on an oceanic route, make satellite equipment a hard requirement in your quote request.
Weigh the cost rationally, too. A satellite-equipped heavy jet bills at $8,000–$15,000 per hour against a super-mid's $5,500–$8,500 — if the only driver is WiFi, a Starlink-retrofitted super-mid (increasingly common) is the arbitrage. Run the route through the cost estimator both ways.
