The US Northeast concentrates more private aviation activity than any other region in the country. The corridor from Boston to Washington, anchored by the New York metro area, generates enormous demand for business and leisure charter. But the commercial airports that serve the region (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Logan) are generally not where private jets go. Private aviation in the Northeast revolves around a network of reliever airports purpose-built or heavily used for general aviation.
Teterboro Airport ([KTEB](/airports/KTEB))
Teterboro is the center of gravity for private aviation in the New York metropolitan area and arguably the entire Northeast. Located in Bergen County, New Jersey, just 12 miles from Midtown Manhattan, KTEB is the closest private jet airport to the city.
Key facts: - Two runways (7,000 feet and 6,013 feet) - Handles 150,000+ operations per year, almost entirely general aviation - Multiple FBOs including Atlantic Aviation, Meridian, and Jet Aviation - No commercial airline service
What makes it important: Proximity to Manhattan. A helicopter transfer from Teterboro to a downtown helipad takes 7-10 minutes. A car service takes 20-40 minutes depending on traffic. For Wall Street, Midtown, and most of Manhattan, KTEB is the airport.
Challenges: Teterboro has slot controls during peak hours. Operators must request departure and arrival slots through the FAA's reservation system. This can limit flexibility during busy periods. Noise restrictions also apply: certain older, louder aircraft types are restricted from operating at KTEB. The airport closes to arrivals between 11 PM and 6 AM.

Everyone. NetJets, Flexjet, Jet Linx, Clay Lacy Aviation, and hundreds of other operators have regular activity at KTEB. If you are chartering in or out of New York, Teterboro is the default unless you have a reason to choose otherwise.
Westchester County Airport ([KHPN](/airports/KHPN))
Westchester County Airport, located in White Plains, New York, serves the northern suburbs of New York City, Fairfield County in Connecticut, and the lower Hudson Valley.
Key facts: - One primary runway (6,548 feet) - FBOs including Westchester Jet, Million Air, and Ross Aviation - Limited commercial service (mostly regional), but primarily known for private aviation - 33 miles north of Midtown Manhattan
What makes it important: Westchester serves a different catchment than Teterboro. For passengers in Greenwich, Stamford, Scarsdale, Bronxville, or anywhere in Westchester County, KHPN is closer and avoids the George Washington Bridge or Lincoln Tunnel crossings needed to reach Teterboro.
Challenges: Runway length limits some heavy jets at maximum takeoff weight. Noise abatement procedures restrict certain operations during nighttime hours. The airport also handles commercial flights, which can create ground delays during peak periods.
Laurence G. Hanscom Field ([KBED](/airports/KBED))
Bedford, Massachusetts, officially Hanscom Field, is Boston's primary private jet airport. Located 20 miles northwest of downtown Boston in Bedford, it is the go-to alternative to Logan International for private aviation.
Key facts: - Two runways (7,011 feet and 5,106 feet) - FBOs including Rectrix Aviation and Jet Aviation - No commercial airline service (purely general aviation and military) - Civil aviation operates alongside a small Air Force installation
What makes it important: Logan International Airport (KBOS) handles private jets, but the experience is mixed. Private flights at Logan share ramp space and ATC sequencing with commercial traffic. KBED offers a dedicated general aviation environment with faster ground times and no airline congestion.
Best for: Passengers heading to the western suburbs (Concord, Lexington, Weston, Wellesley), Route 128 tech corridor, Harvard/MIT area (30-minute drive), or anyone who wants to avoid Logan's commercial terminal environment.
Morristown Municipal Airport ([KMMU](/airports/KMMU))
Morristown, New Jersey, is the second major private aviation airport serving the New York area, positioned west of Manhattan in Morris County.
Key facts: - Two runways (5,999 feet and 3,997 feet) - FBOs including Signature Flight Support and Atlantic Aviation - 30 miles west of Midtown Manhattan - No commercial service
What makes it important: Morristown serves New Jersey's western suburbs (Short Hills, Summit, Chatham, Bernardsville) and parts of Pennsylvania. It is also a popular alternative when Teterboro slots are unavailable. Some operators base aircraft at KMMU because hangar costs are lower than at KTEB.
Trade-off: The drive to Manhattan is longer than from Teterboro (45-75 minutes depending on traffic). For passengers whose final destination is in New Jersey, Morristown may be more convenient than KTEB.
Republic Airport ([KFRG](/airports/KFRG))
Republic Airport in Farmingdale, New York, serves Long Island's private aviation market.
Key facts: - Two runways (6,827 feet and 5,516 feet) - Multiple FBOs including Sheltair - Located on Long Island, 35 miles east of Manhattan - No commercial service
What makes it important: Long Island has a substantial private aviation market driven by the Hamptons (summer), North Shore estates, and commuters to Manhattan. Republic is the only major private jet airport on Long Island.
Seasonal pattern: Summer weekends see heavy traffic as Hamptons-bound travelers depart Friday and return Sunday. The airport handles a surge of helicopter and fixed-wing traffic during Hamptons season.
Philadelphia Northeast Airport ([KPNE](/airports/KPNE))
Philadelphia's dedicated general aviation airport, located in the northeast section of the city.

What makes it important: Philadelphia International (KPHL) can handle private jets, but the experience involves commercial airport congestion. KPNE provides a cleaner private aviation experience for passengers in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Choosing the Right Airport
Practical Considerations
Slot controls at KTEB. If you need flexibility on departure time, Morristown or Westchester may offer more scheduling freedom.
Noise restrictions. Most Northeast airports have nighttime noise restrictions. If you are arriving late or departing early, confirm your aircraft type is compliant.
Winter weather. The Northeast corridor is weather-sensitive. De-icing delays, low visibility, and winter storms can affect all airports in the region. Having a backup airport in mind (e.g., KMMU as backup for KTEB) is smart planning.
FBO quality varies. Even at the same airport, different FBOs offer different experiences. Read FBO reviews on the airport's Bravo page before selecting.
