San Juan, PR
The Caribbean gateway — no passport required
San Juan is the private-aviation hub of the Caribbean and the easiest island escape for U.S. travelers. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, there's no passport and no customs on domestic flights, so a jet from the mainland arrives like any other domestic trip. Passengers trade winter for warm water, the cobblestoned streets and 500-year-old forts of Old San Juan, the resort strip of Condado and Isla Verde, and quick onward hops to Vieques, Culebra, St. Thomas, and St. Barts. Peak demand runs December through April and spikes over the holidays and long winter weekends.
Two airports serve the metro. Luis Muñoz Marín International (SJU/TJSJ) has a roughly 10,000-foot runway that accepts anything up to heavy and ultra-long-range jets, with full FBO handling. Closer to the city, Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci — Isla Grande (TJIG) — is the convenient executive field on the San Juan waterfront, minutes from Old San Juan and Condado and best suited to light and midsize jets and turboprops. Most heavy-metal charters use SJU; owners headed straight downtown often prefer Isla Grande.
