St. Barthelemy, St. Barthelemy
The Caribbean's most exclusive short field
St. Barthelemy is the glittering apex of Caribbean private aviation, a French island synonymous with superyachts, celebrity, and the legendary New Year's Eve season in Gustavia and along Flamands and Saline beaches. The winter high season packs the harbor with megayachts and the villas with a jet-set crowd of billionaires, fashion figures, and entertainers, peaking dramatically over the Christmas-to-New-Year window. Passengers are ultra-high-net-worth leisure travelers who accept a small-aircraft final leg as the price of admission. Demand is concentrated from December through April, with the holiday fortnight the most intense stretch of the year.
Gustaf III Airport (SBH/TFFJ) has one of the most demanding approaches in the world: a single runway of only about 650 metres, entered over a steep hillside with a sharp descent and departures out over the beach, certified only for small turboprops and light aircraft such as the Pilatus PC-12 and Cessna Caravan flown by specially qualified pilots. Private jets cannot land here; heavy and midsize jets arrive at St. Maarten (SXM/TNCM) about 10 minutes away by air, then transfer by inter-island turboprop shuttle or helicopter. There is light handling on the field but no jet operations, with St. Maarten and San Juan (SJU/TJSJ) as the practical gateways. From the SBH strip it is a short five- to ten-minute drive to Gustavia and the main beaches.
